Over 250 years old, the Great Banyan is the main draw in Kolkata’s Botanical garden. From a distance, you might think these are individual trees covering the whole landscape, but these are in fact aerial roots. The tree, which covers about 14,500 square meters of land, has 3600 such roots! Despite cyclone damage – when its main trunk had to be cut off – it still continues to branch out. Thimmamma Marrimanu in Andhra may be the largest tree around the world, but it’s for nothing this one’s called the Great Banyan. Go see.
